Thank you Mel. You have described my teenage son, and your story has made it easier to understand. Like your mother, I also worry about him, how he will cope once he leaves home. He is very quiet, has fleeting eye contact, and prefers to just talk to me, but I never get the spontaneous I love you, or a hug, which makes me sad. I always have to remind him to eat and make schedules for him. He also never tells me if he needs a book for school, or if something is broken, so I contantly have to check in with him and ask him what he needs. He can't stand driving and finds it very stressful. I never know if he is happy or sad and have to guess his emotions and work out if he wants to be involved in what we are doing. Sometimes it feels like I am living two lives, his and mine, and it is very tiring. I hope he finds a partner as lovely as your husband sounds.

Your description of yourself echoes the 'differentness' of a child I know. Thanks for the insight. It'll be valuable in my relationship with her.
