Just wanted to say that this story made a lasting impression on me - I realized that doing things that I love with my son (rather than just things he loves) was a brilliant way to connect with him, and you inspired me to do more of it. Some things I like doing have become his favourite activities over this summer. Gardening, going to the beach, cooking on the BBQ, cycling, making pancakes and bacon, and wrestling. Even if he were not disabled, I should be doing those kind of things, but unfortunately all the therapy he's received led to me picking the kind of activities the therapists do. This became sterile because my heart was not in it. Far better was to work the lessons of the therapy into the activities I love to do.

So we talk about what we're doing, and I try to extend his use of language that way. I do things that are a little bit beyond him, hoping he will summon the courage to jump the gap. Just last week, for the first time, he waded into the sea after me, right up to his hips. I was stoked. He was bowled by a wave, got soaked and wanted to get out, but next time, he came in again, so he clearly wasn't scarred by the experience, and did seem to have a better awareness of the waves. Nothing I've done before has ever given him any awareness of them, however often I've pointed them out. Now he giggles and laughs and catches them and throws shells at them, and is not frightened when they wet him.

My only criticism is that your story is so well written that it delayed my own writing here. Hopefully, my account finds its way in, and I encourage any other readers with a story to do the same. Our stories help each other.

Thank you Giovanni - for the story and the recipe; the former uplifting, the latter tempting!

It would be remiss of me not to point out that, to the extent that we've been able to look at Lucia's diagnosis and her difference as something positive, it's been thanks in large part - especially for me personally - to Hilary and Russell. I'm very pleased that they felt that her story belonged here.

Marvelous description of how to interpret the thoughts of others. Willing to understand the workings of the minds of others shows a very perceptive nature. Your daughter is lucky to have you as her father.
